This is an exploration to do similar to Snapchat. Once you view the unseen clips in a stream, you are caught up there.
The next time you receive something new in that stream, you would start off where you left off and a few from the past, but it would hide the clips from longer ago (at least in the stream page indicator). This is relieving. You feel more complete. You also pay attention more when you have "voicemail".
If you go the oldest clip in your current buffer of particles of this stream, then it would load more, but still this forces you to operate differently. Long-term we can provide different views such as a list view to traverse through particles in a stream quicker.
This flow would be a definitive feature for conversational flow. It's relieving purely because when you re-enter that stream, you are not fed more particles than necessary.
Introducing ephemerality resolves this because older streams would no longer show, and thus, people create new streams for new topics/issues/thoughts.
This may overall be cleaner than bundling within streams and making streams more complex. We would avoid nesting complexity within a stream. Viewing a stream's particles would be more reproducible instead of always mutating.
However, this remains a problem if our product encourages maintaining streams forever instead of letting go.
